The open source Hadoop project introduced a completely new architecture that has made it far more usable. NoSQL databases like HBase, Cassandra and MongoDB have taken on new features and pulled ahead of the pack. Amazon's DynamoDB has become far more capable in terms of indexing and integration with other AWS data services. Microsoft introduced its own NoSQL database called DocumentDB and added HBase to HDInsight, its Hadoop distribution, which now runs on Linux as well as Windows.
