ASP.NET Core in the Microsoft Cloud

Every company is a software company. Keeping your business running and your customers happy requires constant improvement in the apps you build as well as how you build them. Microsoft's cloud solution Azure provides you with a rich set of choices for your apps and services whether it's all in PaaS, IaaS, or some hybrid. ASP.NET Core is Microsoft's next generation runtime, that's optimized for microservice architectures and your next big thing. Wrap it up with good people, process, and product in the form for Azure DevOps and you've got a winning solution to reduce lead time and delight your customers.

Over two days, Brian will cover how to set your team up for success using Azure DevOps using ASP.NET Core as the foundation technology. However, what you learn will apply to any app, on any platform, with any code base. Beyond that, Brian will show you how to build a modern Microservices based ASP.NET Core app using the state of the art in container technology.

Day 1: ASP.NET Core with Azure DevOps
February 6, 2019
9:00AM – 5:00PM
Level: Introductory / Intermediate

DevOps is an organizational transformation that starts with people, process, and then products. It's a journey of continuous improvement that requires changes just about everywhere. As a developer, how can you embrace DevOps at a more technical level? You've heard you need to change the way you work with version control–trunk-based development? The idea of feature flags sounds intriguing, but how do you do it? Do you still need testers? How do you get to "10 plus deployments a day?"

This all-day workshop, is broken into five parts where you'll start with nothing and end with an ASP.NET Core app with a SQL Server database running in Azure with a full continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipeline managed by Azure DevOps.

First, there will be a review on the current thinking on DevOps. Next will be the planning and tracking phase where the architecture of the app will be broken out and defined. Then the dev and test phase where you get feature flags implemented, CI builds working, manual and automated tests, and more. In the release phase, you'll look at how you create a deployment pipeline to multiple environments and how you validate a deployment after its release. Finally, the monitor and learn phase will cover analytics and user feedback and how you start the cycle over again. By the end of the day you'll have the technical knowledge on how to build your own modern ASP.NET Core and SQL Database solution that runs in Azure and has a full DevOps flow using Azure DevOps.

Day 2: ASP.NET Core Microservices with Docker, K8s, and AKS
February 7, 2019
9:00AM – 5:00PM
Level: Introductory / Intermediate

From monoliths to client server, to myriad distributed architectures and acronyms created by marketing, how we build applications small and large had evolved. In this workshop, you will learn how to build a rich, modern microservice architecture with ASP.NET Core, running in Azure. Taking a sample application, you'll learn the basics of ASP.NET Core and how to get it running in Azure.

Next will you'll learn how to containerize it on Docker for either Windows or Linux based on the current state of the art. You'll learn good dev practices in the small covering tools like Visual Studio, VS Code, command-line tools, Minikube, and virtualization.

You will learn about deployment options including Azure Web App for Containers and Kubernetes in Azure using AKS. You'll learn the pros and cons with examples on how to deploy to both. Next, you'll learn about how to manage your persistence layer with an examination of SQL Server running in containers. Finally, you'll learn the basic on how to apply good DevOps practices using Azure DevOps, pipelines, and supporting practices like configuration as code.
